Using Endolysin to treat Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin disease that causes dryness, redness and scaling on the victim’s skin. It is a skin condition that has affected many people, both children and adults. The disease causes itching in the affected areas, mostly the palm of the hands, inner elbows and back of the knee. Studies show that 20% of the children and 1 in every 12 adults suffer from atopic eczema.

According to these studies, the S. Aureus bacterium has been pointed out as the cause of eczema disease. Most of the eczema patients have been found to have colonization with the bacteria. An increase in the bacteria’s concentration levels also increases the severity of the symptoms. Hence, research on finding a way to destroy the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria without destroying the good bacteria in the skin.

Previous treatments of the disease cause various side effects. For instance, drugs commonly used to treat eczema such as corticosteroids and anti-bacteria could damage all bacteria on the skin, including the good and important bacteria. Endolysins are hydrolytic enzymes that are produced by phages to open the bacterial cell wall to allow for reproduction of new bacteriophages. Endolysins are the most effective in antibacterial agents since they are less susceptible to resistance. Phages latch onto the cell wall of bacteria and inject their DNA into the cell. As new phages are reproduced, the endolysin enzymes break the cell open to release the phages, while killing the bacteria. Studies show that the phages could be used in treatment of pathogenic bacterial infections. This is the procedure used in destroying Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Use of bacteriophages has several advantages over the antibacterial. Endolysin enzyme is highly evolved and able to target specific bonds. This makes the therapy effective in that it allows the users to target the specific strains that are harmful. This is unlike antibiotics whose reach is wide to cover all bacteria. Destruction of good bacteria in the skin causes poor skin health and the victim is left more susceptible to infections.

The skin has a large number of bacteria, divided into four phyla. The variety of the bacteria helps to protect the skin. Comparison between a healthy skin and that of a patient suffering from eczema shows that the staphylococcus aureus bacteria has colonized the composition of the skin bacteria among patients, to a level of about 80%. This colonization is a case known as disbiosis. Owing to the understanding of staphylococcus aureus, it is understood that their toxins are causative agents of inflammation and itching for patients.

In order to rehabilitate the skin and regain the balance in bacteria concentration, scientists suggest the use of endolysin. The endolysin enzyme is created to target the specific cell walls of the S. aureus bacteria. The research has not been well understood by many and is in its initial human usage. This research could also shed a light on the causes of eczema and its relation to S. aureus.

In its preliminary studies, the use of endolysin proves to help reduce the symptoms of eczema. There are patients who have stated that the treatment reduces the inflammation and other symptoms. Studies show that that the bacteria should make up less than 5% of the bacteria in the skin. The high levels among the patients can be reduced. Since the endolysin targets a particular membrane of the cell wall, resistance to the drug is at its minimal levels.
